Présentation
Le droit entretient avec le temps des relations multiples, complexes et parfois paradoxales. Le droit façonne le temps, le contraint, le suspend ou l’accélère. Il hérite du passé, organise le présent et projette l’avenir. Il prétend à une temporalité spécifique, tout en s’inscrivant dans la temporalité des sociétés, qui le dépasse.
Cette thématique invite à interroger les multiples dimensions temporelles du phénomène juridique. Les propositions pourront porter sur plusieurs aspects de la thématique :
- Comment penser la temporalité du droit ?
- Peut-on penser le droit à partir d’une idée de durée ou de permanence?
- Quelles sont les spécificités de la temporalité juridique ?
- En quoi le temps constitue-t-il une catégorie d’analyse du phénomène juridique ?
- Comment le droit structure-t-il et organise-t-il le temps social et politique ?
- Comment les acteurs du droit mobilisent-ils le temps comme ressource, contrainte ou stratégie ?
Les conférences plénières exploreront notamment les axes suivants : la justice réparative ou restaurative, la performativité du droit, les dynamiques temporelles de l’institution sociale du droit, les contraintes temporelles dans l’application du droit (rétroactivité, précédent, délais, prescription) et dans les procédures, les échéances, cycles et alternances qui organisent la vie politique, le moment constituant, la temporalité du raisonnement, l’héritage des idées politiques et juridiques, la révolution comme modalité de l’action.

The Times of Law
The French Society for Legal and Political Philosophy and Theory (SFPJ) is organizing the fourth edition of the SFPJ Meetings at the University of Caen Normandy on 10–11 September 2026. The overall theme of this scholarly event is: “The Times of Law.”
Overview
Law maintains multiple, complex, and sometimes paradoxical relationships with time. Law shapes time, constrains it, suspends it, or accelerates it. It inherits the past, organizes the present, and projects the future. It lays claim to a specific temporality, while also being embedded in the temporality of societies, which exceeds it.
This theme invites reflection on the many temporal dimensions of legal phenomena. Proposals may address several aspects of the topic, for example:
- How should we think about the temporality of law?
- Can law be conceived through an idea of duration or permanence?
- What are the specific features of legal temporality?
- In what ways is time a category of analysis for legal phenomena?
- How does law structure and organize social and political time?
- How do legal actors mobilize time as a resource, constraint, or strategy?
The plenary lectures will explore, in particular, the following axes: reparative or restorative justice; the performativity of law; temporal dynamics of law as a social institution; temporal constraints in the application of law (retroactivity, precedent, time limits, limitation periods) and in procedures; deadlines, cycles, and alternations that organize political life; the constituent moment; the temporality of reasoning; the legacy of political and legal ideas; and revolution as a modality of action.
Proposals are not limited to the themes listed above and may relate to the topic in various ways. The purpose of this event is to foster dialogue and exchanges among researchers in legal and political theory/philosophy, regardless of institutional affiliation or approach.
